When is a book club more than a group of people reading the same book? At Davidson Correctional Center, it’s when the conversation goes way beyond the pages.
For the men in the facility’s Book Club, led by staff and supported by volunteers, books are a starting point for something much bigger: understanding, empathy and personal growth.
The club builds literacy, reading and critical-thinking skills, but it also builds confidence and connections. As one participant explained, a conversation that starts with the book can quickly become a conversation about their own lives and experiences.
“It starts with talking about the characters in the book, but next thing you know, you aren’t even talking about the characters anymore. We’re just talking about each other’s lives,” said a Book Club participant Toney King.
