Sampson Correctional Institution houses male offenders in medium custody. 

Sampson is home to the largest of several Correction Enterprises laundries.  Offenders may also be assigned to work in food service, maintenance, janitorial or recreation jobs, and/or participate in a number of educational and vocational programs.

Sampson Community College works with the prison to provide vocational classes in horticulture, CE computer application and laundry washroom technology. Classes are also offered to help offenders prepare for HiSet/GED tests. Campbell University and Sampson Correctional Institution have partnered to provide college level studies and degrees in communications and substance abuse counseling for qualifying students.

Sampson was one of 51 county prisons for which the state assumed responsibility with the passage of the Conner Bill in 1931 and was one of 61 field unit prisons renovated or built during the late 1930s to house offenders who worked building roads.
