Granville Correctional Institution houses close custody offenders in both single cells and dormitories.  The facility houses offenders assigned to various restrictive housing and control statuses and some pre-trial safekeepers. The prison's high-security unit houses the state's most violent and assaultive offenders.

The prison offers a wide variety of educational and vocational programs and is home to one of the prison system's four schools for young offenders.

Formerly known as Polk Correction Institution, the facility opened in 1997, replacing the former Polk Youth Institution on Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh, at the current site of the NC Museum of Art.
