The death of Harnett Correctional Institution offender Gary S. Love #1533320 in May was a suicide, according to the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, which issued its determination Sept. 20.
Love, 54, was found unresponsive in his bunk May 13. Prison staff attempted life-saving measures and called EMS. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Law enforcement was notified of the death and investigated, as is common in these circumstances. The Department of Adult Correction cooperated fully and conducted its own investigation.
Love was convicted Dec. 17, 2018, in Iredell County of first-degree murder plus child sex offenses, kidnapping, sexual servitude and assault. He was sentenced to life plus more than 200 years.
