Alexander Correctional offender dies in apparent suicide

Alexander Correctional Institution offender Michael Curtis Sauls (#1674656) has died of an apparent suicide.

Sauls, 64, was found unresponsive in his cell around 3 p.m. Sunday. Prison medical staff performed life-saving procedures, which EMS continued, but he was pronounced dead at 3:20 p.m.

Law enforcement and the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner have been notified and are investigating, as required in these circumstances. The Department of Adult Correction is cooperating fully and conducting its own investigation.

Sauls was convicted in December 2021 of second degree murder in Wake County and sentenced to a minimum of 18 years. His projected release date was in 2040.
