The death of Dustin M. Grimes #1533320 in November 2023 was a suicide, according to a final determination by the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Grimes, 26, was found unresponsive in his cell at Central Prison on Oct. 24. Prison staff attempted life-saving measures and called EMS, which transported him to a local hospital, where he died Nov. 1.
Law enforcement and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner were notified of the death and investigated, as is standard in these circumstances. The Department of Adult Correction cooperated fully and conducted its own investigation.
Grimes was moved on Oct. 23 to pretrial detention at Central Prison by court order at the request of the Wilkes County Detention Center.
