Offender dies from apparent suicide at Foothills Correctional

Foothills Correctional Institution offender Jeffery Riley Hoke (#0186852) has died of an apparent suicide.

Hoke, 53, was found unresponsive in his cell around 5 a.m. Sunday. Correctional staff began life-saving procedures, but EMS pronounced him dead around 5:45 a.m.

Law enforcement and the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner have been notified and are investigating, as required in these circumstances. The Department of Adult Correction is cooperating fully and conducting its own investigation.

Hoke was convicted in September 2023 of speeding to elude arrest and larceny of a motor vehicle in Catawba County. After serving three months, he was released to probation in January 2024. His probation was revoked following an arrest in March. A projected release date had not yet been determined at the time his death.
