Suicide suspected in death at Pasquotank Correctional Institution

A person in custody at Pasquotank Correctional Institution died Friday of an apparent suicide.

Tyrus Sanders #0357855 was found unresponsive in his cell around 8:30 p.m. Staff performed life-saving measures. Local EMS pronounced him dead at 8:52 p.m.

Law enforcement and the state medical examiner are investigating, which is required in the death of someone in custody. The NC Department of Adult Correction is cooperating fully with those investigations and is conducting its own.

Sanders, 49, was convicted on habitual felon and drug trafficking charges in July in Catawba County. His projected release date was in 2041.
