Christopher Auer is the new warden of Craven Correctional Institution. Auer previously served as the facility's associate warden of operations.

"We were fortunate to have someone already in place to take the leadership of Craven Correctional Institution," said Secretary of Adult Correction Leslie Cooley Dismukes. "Warden Auer's 24 years of experience in the corrections field, combined with his proven ability as a leader, will benefit Craven Correctional and the NC Department of Adult Correction."

As warden, Auer is in charge of all operations at the Vanceboro facility, which is one of NCDAC's most active processing centers for new admissions. Last year, more than 7,000 newly sentenced men entered the state correctional system at Craven Correctional, where they were evaluated for individual needs and for long-term facility assignment.

Auer served five years in the U.S. Army before beginning his career as a correctional food service officer in 2001 at Hyde Correctional Institution. He became a correctional officer at Hyde Correctional in 2006 and earned promotions to sergeant in 2008, lieutenant in 2011 and captain in 2016. He transferred as a captain to Craven Correctional in 2019, where he was promoted to associate warden in 2023.

Over his career, Auer has served on the East Region Intelligence Team, the Correctional Sergeant's Examination Committee and on the Classification Committee at both the facility and division levels.
