A two-day initiative named Operation Big Show focusing on the compliance of high-risk offenders on probation and parole supervision resulted in the arrest of 54 individuals and the service of more than 100 warrants.  Beginning in the pre-dawn hours on Tuesday June 7, more than 160 law enforcement officers in Nash and Edgecombe counties hit the streets in search of absconders from probation supervision, individuals wanted on outstanding warrants and to conduct compliance searches on high-risk and gang involved probationers.

The Rocky Mount Police Department, in collaboration with the United States Marshals Service and the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, will be conducting a media briefing Thursday, June 9 at 11:30 a.m. in the Council Chambers, located at the City of Rocky Mount Administrative Complex, 331 S. Franklin St.  in Rocky Mount.  The purpose of this event will be to discuss the details of a recent compliance enforcement and search operation that involved more than 160 officers from 15 different agencies from this and surrounding areas.

Officials with the Department of Public Safety have requested that law enforcement look into the cause of death of an inmate at Caledonia Correctional Institution. A correctional sergeant found Charles Moss (0504341) unresponsive just before midnight Wednesday night. Correctional staff initiated CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and called EMS and the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office. Attempts to resuscitate the inmate were not successful and EMS pronounced Moss deceased just before 1 a.m.

The first class of three assistance dogs trained by inmates through the “At Both Ends of the Leash” (ABEL) program at Franklin Correctional Center graduated today to be placed with people with disabilities. In a cooperative venture of the state prison system and Eyes Ears Nose and Paws (EENP), a Chapel Hill based non-profit that trains and places assistance dogs, inmates have learned to train service dogs and medical alert dogs.

Death row inmate Bernard Lamp #0946174 died this morning at Rex Hospital of apparent natural causes.    Lamp was convicted and sentenced to death in 2014 for the 2007 murder of Bonnie Lou Irvine in Iredell County.

The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice has named Daren Bruce as the new superintendent at Wilkes Correctional Center in North Wilkesboro. Bruce is a 26-year corrections veteran who most recently served as assistant superintendent of custody and operations at Alexander Correctional Institution in Taylorsville.  He began his career as a correctional officer in Alexander County and served many of his early years at Western Youth Institution. At Alexander CI, he served as a unit manager, special affairs captain, accreditation manager and PREA compliance manager.

The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice has named Kevin Barnes as the new administrator at Warren Correctional Institution in Manson. Barnes is a 28-year corrections veteran who most recently served as the assistant superintendent for custody and operations at Nash Correctional Institution.  He began his career as a correctional officer at the old Polk Youth Center in Raleigh and has served in staff and supervisory positions at seven state prison facilities.  He has also served as a leader on a regional Prison Emergency Response Team.

Fifty percent of the people ejected from a vehicle crash are killed, according to the commander of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Colonel Bill Grey. “Wearing your seat belt is the single most effective action to protect yourself in a crash,” Grey said at the annual Click It or Ticket press conference held May 23 at the Highway Patrol training track.  “Click It or Ticket, every seat, every time.  It’s the Law.”
