United States Attorney Thomas G. Walker announced today that local community agencies that assist crime victims will benefit from $60,012,054 that has been awarded to the State of North Carolina by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Victims of Crime (OVC).
The North Carolina Department of Public Safety’s Governor’s Crime Commission will distribute these funds to domestic violence shelters, rape crisis centers, and other local agencies to provide services to victims, such as crisis intervention, counseling, emergency shelter, and criminal justice advocacy.

Grand opening of the NCNG’s Tarheel Challenge Youth Academy’s central campus and ground breaking of a female dormitory. The 20-acre property has undergone a $1.9 million renovation and will begin its inaugural class this fall. Members of the North Carolina Governor’s Crime Commission met Sept. 9-10 and voted on priorities for the 2016 grant cycle in the areas of juvenile justice, criminal justice improvement and crime victim services.
Categories for the 2016 grant proposals include juvenile alternatives to confinement, gang intervention and prevention, cyber-bullying, prescription drug diversion programs, veterans and teen courts, statewide infrastructure and technology, law enforcement equipment, human trafficking prevention, and family justice centers.

The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice today introduced two clinicians who are assuming key leadership positions in the state prison mental and behavioral health system.
North Carolina National Guard Citizen-Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment returned to North Carolina via the Onslow County airport Sept. 2 after serving a year in the Middle East as part of Operation Spartan Shield.
Two Alamance County men were arrested today on felony prostitution charges. A third man was not located but felony warrants for his arrest are currently outstanding. After the arrests, searches of three residences were conducted in relation to the criminal charges. The warrants for both the arrests and related searches were obtained by agents of the State Bureau of Investigation.
