The State of North Carolina and FEMA have approved $1.6 million to reimburse the North Carolina Department of Transportation for Hurricane Florence-related road and culvert repair in Davidson and Rowan counties.  The grant brings the total to more than $70.5 million to reimburse NCDOT for Hurricane Florence-related expenses. FEMA’s total share for the projects is $49.8 million and the state’s share is $20.7 million.

A Tabor Correctional Institution offender with pre-existing medical conditions, who tested positive for COVID-19, has died at a hospital. “His death is tragic, and we continue to work hard to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in our prisons,” said Todd Ishee, Commissioner of Prisons. “The health and safety of the staff and the offender population is our top priority.” The offender tested positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 27 He was hospitalized on Oct. 28. His condition worsened, and he died on Nov. 9.

The application period for the N.C. Housing Opportunities and Prevention of Evictions (HOPE) Program will close at 6 p.m. tomorrow. Prior to the deadline, low- and- moderate-income renters experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19 are encouraged to apply online at nc211.org/hope or by calling 2-1-1 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. today or tomorrow.

An offender participating in Extending the Limits of Confinement (ELC) who walked away from his residence has been apprehended. Darryl Cordell was taken into custody by law enforcement in South Carolina, who transported him to a local detention center. Cordell was serving an active sentence for Habitual Felon, Felony Breaking and Entering, Larceny after Breaking and Entering, Open Container and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He had a projected release date of March 20, 2021.

On Sunday, November 8, at approximately 2:15 pm, an aircraft with the State Highway Patrol’s Aviation Section crashed during a training mission.  The crash occurred near the SHP’s hangar facility on Tryon Rd. in Wake County.  As the helicopter was returning to the hangar facility, the aircraft went down striking several trees on its descent. As a result, the aircraft came to rest on Tryon Rd. in an upright position.  

As a tribute to a major champion for the Bertie Public Safety Cadets Program and advocate for creating a path for youth to enter the criminal justice profession, the Gwen F. Norville Scholarship Award has been created at Martin Community College in Williamston. Norville, former Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice deputy secretary; deputy director of Prisons; and a director of Staff Training & Development passed away suddenly in September 2017. Many of Gwen’s colleagues as well as community criminal justice system partners wanted to honor her memory in a special way.

A Mountain View Correctional Institution offender with pre-existing medical conditions, who tested positive for COVID-19, has died at a hospital. “His death is saddening, and we continue to work hard to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in our prisons,” said Todd Ishee, Commissioner of Prisons. “The health and safety of the staff and the offender population is our top priority.” The offender tested positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 15 He was hospitalized on Oct. 22. His condition worsened, and he died on Nov. 1.
