WHAT: The meeting of the Joint Reentry Council, established by Gov. Roy Cooper under Executive Order 303, issued Jan. 29, which directs all State Cabinet agencies to coordinate efforts in improving rehabilitation and reentry of offenders returning to their communities after incarceration.

The Executive Order also joins North Carolina to Reentry 2030, a multistate initiative to improve services and expand opportunities for offenders as a means to reduce recidivism.

CLINTON — Kevin Cook battled nerves and the graduation tassel that swung in front of his eyes as he spoke on behalf of his 10 classmates in front of the small crowd that gathered for the first commencement ceremony for Campbell University’s prison teaching program at Sampson Correctional Facility on Tuesday.

The third graduating class of the North Carolina Field Minister Program at Nash Correctional Institution received their diplomas on June 7.
More than 500 reentry professionals, advocates, service providers and local reentry council members participated in the three-day 2023 NC Reentry Conference. 

April is Second Chance Month in North Carolina, a time to remember the obstacles faced by the more than 20,000 people returning to their communities after leaving state prisons.  
 
More than one-quarter of North Carolinians have criminal records that frequently triggers collateral consequences limiting their housing and employment opportunities.  
 

In black robes and mortarboards over tan prison uniforms, 13 offenders graduated from the Field Ministers program Wednesday at Nash Correctional Institution.
