Pharmacy Services
Licensed clinical and dispensing pharmacists provide quality, comprehensive, and timely pharmaceutical care. In collaboration with medical, nursing, and mental health teams, our pharmacists promote
wellness, disease prevention, and optimized healthcare outcomes. Medications and medical supplies are dispensed in accordance with Drug Formulary guidelines and a prior authorization approval process. NCDAC participates in a nationwide government Group Purchasing Organization and the Federal 340B Drug Pricing Program to control costs and maintain access to needed therapies. Pharmacists use advanced automation technology to improve the accuracy, efficiency, and safety of medication dispensing and delivery.
Health Services also operates three pharmacies:
Apex Central Pharmacy (dispenses medications to facilities across the state)
Central Prison Healthcare Complex Pharmacy (primarily dispenses medications to men housed at this facility)
NC Correctional Institute for Women (NCCIW) Pharmacy (primarily dispenses medications yo women housed at this facility)
Infection Control
Specialty nurses monitor and manage infectious diseases such as Hepatitis, HIV, and Tuberculosis (TB). They coordinate testing, contact investigation, education, and prevention efforts to reduce the spread of communicable diseases within the correctional population. The Infection Control team collaborates with state and local health departments to ensure compliance with public health reporting and disease management standards.
Respiratory Services
The Respiratory Services team provides support for patients requiring ongoing pulmonary care, including maintenance and evaluation of CPAP and BiPAP devices, and pulmonary function testing to assess and monitor respiratory conditions. Respiratory specialists educate patients on the proper use of equipment and promote techniques that improve long-term lung health and overall wellness.
Morbidity and Mortality Review
The Morbidity and Mortality Review program evaluates significant medical events and patient deaths to ensure quality, transparency, and continuous improvement in healthcare delivery. A multidisciplinary team conducts each review to identify contributing factors, recommend corrective actions, and share findings to enhance patient safety and system performance.
