While Gulf Coast states respond to Hurricane Harvey and many North Carolinians continue rebuilding nearly one year after Hurricane Matthew, Governor Roy Cooper today urged residents to update their emergency plans and kits during North Carolina Preparedness Month.
RALEIGH - In response to a request from Texas emergency officials, North Carolina is deploying five swift water rescue teams to assist with search and rescue efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Carolina teams will depart Thursday morning headed to College Station, Texas. The five teams consist of 92 personnel from the following public safety organizations:
Nearly 50 law enforcement officers and support staff from state, local and federal agencies joined forces this week for Operation Hide and Seek, an enforcement operation that served outstanding criminal warrants and conducted compliance checks on high risk and violent offenders on probation and parole in Montgomery County.

When Hurricane Matthew flooded Princeville last fall, it marked the second time in less than 20 years that a flood nearly wiped out the town. Local, state and federal leaders vowed to work with the community to help them recover and figure out solutions to help preserve one of the country's most historically significant towns.
Department of Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks has named Brian Jones to be the new director of Private Protective Services. He comes to the department from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, where he was director of planning and development. He will assume his new duties August 21.
Inmate Richard B. Dwyer (#1327349) died this morning at Lanesboro Correctional Institution after an apparent suicide. He was found unresponsive in his cell at about 10:15 a.m. Prison medical staff and local paramedics responded and worked to resuscitate the inmate, but were unsuccessful.
Dwyer was serving a 29-year sentence for statutory rape. He was scheduled to be released in April 2035.
