Nearly 80 law enforcement officers and support staff from state, local and federal agencies joined forces this week for Operation Heatwave, an enforcement operation that served outstanding criminal warrants and conducted compliance checks on high risk and violent offenders on probation and parole in Scotland County.

Governor Roy Cooper today urged authorities to work quickly to restore power to Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands following the major outage that occurred there yesterday afternoon.
“The situation is stabilizing today thanks to the use of additional portable generators,” Governor Cooper said. “Public safety services have power as do water and sewer. I ask residents and visitors to be patient as everyone works towards restoring the power and getting conditions back to normal on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands. Conserving power is crucial until that time comes.”
Governor Roy Cooper today signed into law Senate Bill 445, a law that reduces the wait time for criminal record expungement for first-time, non-violent offenders.
“Criminal justice shouldn’t end at incarceration. It should end at restoration,” Gov. Cooper said. “We want North Carolinians who have corrected their mistakes to go on to live purposeful, productive lives.”

WHAT: Representatives from local law enforcement agencies will speak about “Operation Heatwave,” a two-day operation that sought wanted fugitives and absconders from probation or parole, drug offenders and confiscation of illegal weapons in Scotland County.
The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice has named Stephanie Freeman as the director of its Office of Staff Development and Training (OSDT).
Approximately 100 state, local and federal officers combined forces this week in Wake County to conduct searches of high-risk individuals on probation or parole supervision and to seek others wanted on outstanding criminal warrants. The two-day effort on June 27-28 resulted in 41 arrests, the seizure of 15 firearms, seizure of approximately $21,000 in cash and quantities of marijuana, cocaine and crystal methamphetamine.

The North Carolina House and Senate both unanimously passed memorial resolutions Tuesday, June 27, that honored Correctional Sgt. Meggan Callahan, who died on April 26 after suffering injuries inflicted by an inmate at Bertie Correctional Institution. Sgt. Callahan’s family was in attendance for the votes in both chambers of the General Assembly, as were correctional officers from several prisons, and senior leadership from the Prisons and from the Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice.
A Tabor Correctional Institution inmate who left his work assignment on Tuesday is back in custody after being captured today at 1 a.m.
Members of the prison staff, along with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Department, captured Ricky Robinson (#0348782) in Whiteville early this morning.
At three North Carolina prisons, inmates are getting behind the wheel and learning new skills in commercial driving, with aspirations of working as truck or bus drivers after their release from prison
Since early 2016, more than 200 inmates have successfully completed the commercial driving program offered at Polk Correctional Institution in Butner, Morrison Correctional Institution in Hoffman and North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women in Raleigh.
