On Sunday, November 8, at approximately 2:15 pm, an aircraft with the State Highway Patrol’s Aviation Section crashed during a training mission. The crash occurred near the SHP’s hangar facility on Tryon Rd. in Wake County. As the helicopter was returning to the hangar facility, the aircraft went down striking several trees on its descent. As a result, the aircraft came to rest on Tryon Rd. in an upright position.

As a tribute to a major champion for the Bertie Public Safety Cadets Program and advocate for creating a path for youth to enter the criminal justice profession, the Gwen F. Norville Scholarship Award has been created at Martin Community College in Williamston. Norville, former Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice deputy secretary; deputy director of Prisons; and a director of Staff Training & Development passed away suddenly in September 2017. Many of Gwen’s colleagues as well as community criminal justice system partners wanted to honor her memory in a special way.

A Central Prison offender with pre-existing medical conditions, who tested positive for COVID-19, has died at the prison’s hospital.
“His death is tragic, and we are working very hard to mitigate the impact of the virus in our prisons,” said Todd Ishee, Commissioner of Prisons. “The health and safety of the staff and the offender population is our top priority.”
The offender tested positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 14 and was in the prison hospital when his condition worsened, and he died on Nov. 3.
An offender participating in Extending the Limits of Confinement (ELC) and who walked away from his transitional housing on Oct. 6 has been captured on Monday. Officers from the Department of Public Safety’s Special Operations and Intelligence Unit (SOIU) captured Michael Coburn (#0080629) at approximately 5 p.m. in Roanoke Rapids.
The State Highway Patrol highlighted the promotion of 71 sworn and 12 civilian members today during a private ceremony held at Colonial Baptist Church in Cary. The event was conducted in celebration of those who received a promotion throughout 2020.
The ceremony began with an invocation provided by Pastor Steve Stadtmiller and the singing of the national anthem by Sergeant Brent M. Tyler. Remarks were provided by Col. Glenn M. McNeill, Jr. who commended each promotee on their newly assigned rank.

The offender tested positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 15 He was hospitalized on Oct. 22. His condition worsened, and he died on Nov. 1.
The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice is actively seeking an offender serving a portion of her active sentence outside of prison who walked away from her residential location in Raleigh. The offender was participating in the Extending the Limits of Confinement (ELC) initiative.
A Pender Correctional Institution offender with pre-existing medical conditions, who tested positive for COVID-19, has died at a hospital.
