The State of North Carolina and FEMA are announcing more than $4.1 million to the Craven County Board of Education for Hurricane Florence-related costs.
The funds, approved through FEMA’s Public Assistance program, reimburse cleaning mold from Craven County elementary, middle and high schools that flooded during Hurricane Florence. The mold removal eliminated health and safety threats so students, faculty and staff could return to school.
An offender was stabbed to death by another offender during an altercation at Alexander Correctional Institution on Wednesday night.
Offender Christopher Parker, 33, (0789551) was stabbed with a homemade weapon around 10 p.m. in a housing unit at the prison. He was transported by EMS to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:51 p.m.
The Highway Patrol continues to investigate a crash involving a state trooper who was hit by a vehicle on US 1 in Vance County. On Tuesday, October 22 at approximately 7:59 p.m., a 2012 Buick traveled off the roadway and struck the trooper from behind as he was conducting a traffic stop.
As a result of the crash, Trooper Craig I. Hundley, a 12-year veteran, assigned to Troop C, District 4 (Franklin County) was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.
After 19 months of meeting, listening, observing and studying the North Carolina prison system, the Prison Reform Advisory Board today presented its recommendations for improvements to Department of Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks.
The seven-person board drafted a report with 30 recommendations in areas such as safety and security, staffing, recruiting and retention and facility maintenance.

On October 22, 2019 at approximately 7:59 pm a member of the State Highway Patrol was struck while conducting a traffic stop on US 1 in Vance County. The involved member was in the process of conducting a traffic stop on US 1 northbound near Sunrock Road when he was struck while outside of his patrol vehicle.
A nearby trooper responded to the scene and immediately provided medical aid to the injured member. The injured member was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital and is in serious condition.

The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice has named Ken Beaver as the new warden of the Piedmont Correctional Institution in Salisbury.
Beaver had been the warden at Alexander Correctional Institution in Taylorsville since 2017.
At 10:17 a.m. tomorrow more than 2.1 million people (including more than 347,000 school children in K-12th grade) have pledged to participate in the Great Southeast Shakeout, the world’s largest earthquake drill. Any individual, family, organization, school, agency or businesses can register for the event. However, if you or your group haven’t registered you can still practice the ‘Drop, Cover, and Hold On’ drill, the recommended action for people to take during an earthquake.
