UPDATE: Members of a prison emergency response team captured Stephon J. Easterling at 6:34 p.m., roughly eight hours after he walked off an off-prison job. He was picked up on Leak Street in Rockingham. He will be transferred to a higher-custody prison and will face escape charges. --- Prison emergency response teams and local law enforcement are searching for Anson Correctional Offender Stephon J. Easterling (#1302109), who left a work release job today in Wadesboro, Anson County.
Secretary of Adult Correction Todd Ishee has named Harold Reep as the new warden of Foothills Correctional Institution in Morganton. Warden Reep most recently served as the compliance manager for the prison system’s western region. “Warden Reep is an outstanding veteran leader with extensive experience in a number of our prisons spanning almost three decades,” said Ishee. “He knows the business back and forth, and he knows Foothills Correctional from top to bottom.”
Scotland Correctional Institution offender Edward D. Gregory (#0802946) died in an apparent suicide on Monday, April 3, 2023. He was found unresponsive in his cell around 4:40 a.m. Monday. The prison’s first responders performed lifesaving measures, and EMS was called. He was pronounced deceased at 5:09 a.m. Law enforcement was notified of the death and is investigating, as is common in these circumstances. The Department of Adult Correction is cooperating fully in the investigation and is also conducting its own investigation.

RALEIGH — Death Row offender Eric Glenn Lane #0667195 died of natural causes early this morning in Central Prison Medical Center. Lane, 51, was convicted and sentenced to death in Wayne County for the 2002 kidnap, rape and murder of Precious Ebony Whitfield.
American Correctional Association auditors have recommended accreditation be awarded to the Columbus Correctional Institution, a high achievement, and another step toward full accreditation of the North Carolina prison system. “This accreditation is the gold standard in the corrections profession,” said Prisons’ audit administrator Paula Page, whose team of professionals assist and guide the facilities in preparing for ACA accreditation. “I am very happy the ACA auditors have recognized the hard work by our staff and our commitment to excellence.”
