What to expect

Best Practices

Applying to Volunteer

Have the folowing documents and information within reach as you apply:

  • Street address and mailing address
  • Phone number
  • Email address 
  • Your full Social Security number and active driver’s license or other state-issued ID
  • The facility or facilities at which you would like to volunteer
  • And the types of volunteer service you would like to provide.

If you are interested in volunteering in a specific religious capacity, you’ll need to provide:

  • Your religious or faith affiliation.
  • The faith organization with which you wish to volunteer.
  • The type of service or activity you wish to provide.

The first step in becoming a volunteer is to apply, using the link on this page.

If you wish to serve as a religious volunteer, please first contact the faith organization with which you wish to volunteer.  After completing that organization's application process and training, you may complete the NCDAC volunteer application.

Apply to be a prison volunteer

This form serves as the official application for all volunteering across NCDAC Institutions.

Volunteer Training

Volunteers are strongly encouraged to complete the online volunteer application prior to registering for Volunteer and PREA Training. If you are approved, you will receive notification with instructions on how to complete the required training. All volunteer training must be completed before you are permitted to participate in any volunteer activities.
 

Training will cover:

  • What to expect inside correctional facilities
  • Sexual Abuse and Sexual Harassment, the Prison Rape Elimination Act (also known as PREA)
  • Safety, security, and emergency procedures.

These training sessions may be conducted virtually or in-person at the facility. (Note: If you prefer in person training, please contact the facility where you will serve to get scheduled for training). 
For virtual training, please select and register for the session that best aligns with your schedule. You may attend any virtual session, regardless of the facility at which you intend to serve.
 

1st Thursday of every month from 1pm-2:30pm and 5pm-6:30pm

At your initial volunteer session, you will also be issued an NCDAC volunteer identification card—blue for volunteering inside a facility. If you are later approved to support community based events, you will be issued a salmon colored volunteer ID.
 
Before entering any facility, you are required to understand and comply with the following: 

  • NCDAC tobacco policy — Tobacco is not permitted in any facility, and providing tobacco to an offender is a felony.
  • Confidentiality requirements — Do not share any information regarding individuals in custody with friends, family, or on social media.
  • Your duty to report — You must report all illegal, unsafe, or non-secure incidents immediately.
