Health Services

The Division of Health Services views correctional facilities as public health stations that significantly impact the larger community.

From intake to release, our Health Services team provides comprehensive healthcare to all those in our custody, including medical, dental, mental health, and inpatient services. Our doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, dental assistants, psychologists, psychiatrists, case managers, and others, provide evidence-based, compassionate, constitutionally consistent healthcare.

A Comprehensive System of Care

Each person receives a thorough health evaluation when they enter an NCDAC facility. This includes a physical exam, mental health screening, dental screening, and updated immunizations.

While in NCDAC custody, our healthcare professionals focus on prevention, early identification, and effective management of health conditions. All 54 NCDAC facilities are able to provide routine primary care medicine. Telehealth appointments and off-site specialty consultations are arranged when needed.

Two major medical centers—the Central Prison Healthcare Complex and the NC Correctional Institution for Women (NCCIW) Healthcare Complex offer inpatient acute care, ambulatory care, and inpatient and residential mental health services. These medical centers also provide a full range of specialty clinics, including orthopedics, podiatry, nephrology, audiology, optometry, advanced dental care such as oral surgery and endodontics, and more. The healthcare team partners with community hospitals and community practitioners for emergency or highly specialized care.
