The following instructions are for attorneys, paralegals or other legal employees who need to visit a person incarcerated in the NC Department of Adult Correction.
These guidelines apply to North Carolina state prisons. Legal visit guidelines for county jails and detention centers may vary. Contact the county sheriff's office regarding its guidelines.
If you are an attorney or paralegal who represents an incarcerated person
Submit a letter of representation to the prison visiting office on firm letterhead to include dates and times requested for your visit. A copy of the attorney’s driver's license and bar card will need to accompany the representation letter. Legal visits are scheduled for two hours. Any request to bring in documentation for review must be included in the representation letter. Each request for a legal visit will require a new letter with a copy of the driver's license and bar card.
If you are an attorney or paralegal who does not represent an incarcerated person
You should write to the incarcerated person directly requesting a visit and you should provide details about the reason you are requesting a visit. The offender will be responsible for notifying in writing the requestor they would like to have a legal visit. Once the attorney receives the offender’s response, they should contact the visitation office and request a legal visit. The attorney will need to submit a letter on letterhead along with a copy of the request from the offender, copy of their driver's license and bar card.
