The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to a fatal collision this morning involving a Columbus County Deputy just outside the town of Chadbourn, N.C.
Eight state police and highway patrol agencies spent Friday, June 10, 2016, through Sunday, June 12, 2016, enforcing Operation Border to Border along approximately 791 miles of U.S. Route 15 in an effort to prevent traffic crashes along the heavily-traveled corridor. This coordinated traffic safety enforcement initiative resulted in 3,068 total summonses and arrests among the eight states. No traffic fatalities occurred during the three-day project.
A two-day initiative named “Operation Safe Summer,” focusing on offenders with outstanding warrants , gang and drug violations, and the compliance of high-risk offenders on probation and parole supervision, resulted in the arrest of 69 individuals, the service of more than 144 warrants, and 296 charges cleared.
Beginning in the early morning hours of Tuesday June 21, more than 100 law enforcement officers converged on the streets of Greenville in search of individuals wanted on outstanding warrants.
Local, state and federal law enforcement and corrections personnel joined forces this week in a two-day joint operation in Alamance County called Operation Summer Slam that resulted in seven arrests and numerous charges.
During the operation, 45 officers and investigators searched residences and vehicles of 43 high-risk offenders on probation or parole supervision and conducted 41 sex offender compliance checks.

At approximately 3 a.m., on Monday, June 20, 2016, the State Highway Patrol responded to a two vehicle collision one-mile north of Rolesville.
According to a preliminary investigation, a 2014 Nissan passenger vehicle was traveling south on NC96 near the intersection of US401 when it was struck head-on by a 2001 GMC sport utility vehicle. After impact, the Nissan traveled onto the westbound shoulder where it came to a final rest. The GMC traveled onto the eastbound shoulder where it struck group of trees and caught fire.
The North Carolina state prison system is ending the use of solitary confinement for its youngest inmates and introducing a new youthful offender program to focus on the needs of young people serving sentences in the adult prison system.
The Department of Public Safety and Windsor Police Department are investigating the death of an inmate following a fight Friday night at Bertie Correctional Institution.
Preliminary indications are that five inmates were involved in the fight around 10:30 last night. Correctional staff broke up the fight and called EMS. Two inmates were taken to the hospital.
