A man who had been on the run for 15 years after being charged in a fatal collision near Hickory was apprehended Friday in California, after the FBI located him living under an alias.Miguel Lopez Garcia was arrested Friday by Los Angeles County Sheriff deputies in Palmdale, CA after FBI analysts located him living there under the name Rene Zavala. Garcia disappeared shortly after a February 2000 accident on US 321 in Catawba County that killed Troy Setliff II of Conover.
Members of the North Carolina Emergency Management’s Helo-Aquatic Rescue Team, known as NC HART, rescued three stranded kayakers Sunday afternoon from the swollen Cape Fear River. The trio had gone kayaking Sunday morning but became stuck in the unusually high and turbulent river in the northeastern part of Lee County.
Department of Public Safety Secretary Frank Perry addressed attendees of the 10th Annual Eastern North Carolina Gang Conference held at the University of Mount Olive on Jan. 7.“We have a growing, serious gang problem,” Perry said. “Ninety percent of violent crime is caused by gangs.” However, Perry said that North Carolina is ahead of most states in being on top of the gang problem because of the technological resources in place, good law enforcement and dedicated community groups.
At approximately 2 p.m., on Wednesday, Jan. 6, a Highway Patrol trooper, who is a member of the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force, attempted to make traffic stop for an equipment violation on 17th St. near Medical Center Drive in Wilmington. The driver, Jacquez Oshea Hill, 17, of Wilmington, failed to stop and a short pursuit ensued.

Governor Pat McCrory announced that during the past year, inmates at state prisons and juveniles at a youth development center raised more than 35,800 pounds of fresh produce and donated it to local food banks and other service organizations as part of an ongoing initiative to fight hunger in local communities.
“DPS horticulture programs have yielded massive donations to feed low-income seniors and families across North Carolina, while teaching inmates valuable work and life skills they’ll need to turn their lives around,” said Governor McCrory.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol along with fellow troopers across the country are once again joining forces with the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the United States Department of Transportation by participating in the national Drive to Save Lives campaign. The campaign will consist of 16 State Highway Patrol and State Police agencies along the I-95 corridor; a major travel corridor along the east coast.
Thanks to a partnership between two state agencies, child care operators now have an “easy button” to help them develop, update and submit emergency plans that provide protective actions for children in their care. The web-based tool announced by Governor McCrory last week can be used to create plans for everything from fire, tornadoes, and floods to an active assailant.The online application was developed by the Department of Public Safety’s Emergency Management Division and the Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Child Development and Early Education.
