As local governments begin to issue evacuation orders, Governor Roy Cooper today advised people to pay attention to local evacuation instructions related to Hurricane Dorian and reminded others that time to get ready for the storm is running out.  “I urge you to closely follow the forecast and listen to your local officials,” said Governor Cooper. “If they order an evacuation please follow their instructions.”
Director of Prisons Kenneth Lassiter announced today he is retiring at the end of September after 30 years of service. “Kenneth has given dedicated and loyal service to North Carolinians and to the men and women whom he has served with, or led, for the past three decades,’’ said Commissioner of Prisons Todd Ishee. “This is his decision, and it is bittersweet as we will miss his energy, enthusiasm and expertise, but we celebrate his career of public service.”
Department of Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks and other state officials today officially dedicated the new dining hall at Samarcand Training Academy in a ribbon-cutting ceremony held in Moore County. The newly constructed 7,500 square foot building is capable of seating 180 students, guests and visitors. The facility offers greatly expanded space and amenities compared to the smaller cafeteria it replaces. Groundbreaking began in February 2018 and was recently completed by the NC DPS Inmate Construction Program at a cost of $2.7 million.
WHAT: North Carolina Department of Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks, along with other DPS leadership, government officials and community members, will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony next week to dedicate the new Samarcand Training Academy Dining Hall in Moore County.  
The North Carolina Helicopter-Aquatic Rescue Team, known as NC HART, is growing with additional aircraft and training for its crews.   With the addition of two Bell 407 helicopters recently acquired by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the number of participating NC HART aircraft is growing to eight.   
Governor Roy Cooper shared the following comment after the federal register was published for $168 million in hurricane recovery mitigation funds for North Carolina. Congress passed the mitigation funding on February 9, 2018 to help communities affected by Hurricane Matthew in 2016 become stronger and more resilient.
As students across North Carolina make preparations to begin the school year, the State Highway Patrol is requesting the motoring public to keep safe travel a top priority. More than 14,000 school buses will be hitting the roadways, transporting over 790,000 children to and from school. With this in mind, motorists are encouraged to plan for delays as congestion is to be expected during the morning and afternoon commute.

An offender at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor died on Aug. 18 in an apparent suicide.
