A minimum custody offender at the Dan River Work Farm walked away from an off-site job training class in Roxboro at 3:05 p.m. today. Steven Orlando Barrett Jr. (1287647) was last seen in the vicinity of the closed Person County Prison (which is used as a satellite classroom), where Barrett was a taking an electrical wiring class.
A Dan River Work Farm offender who walked away from an off-site job training class today is back in custody after being captured. 
Law enforcement captured a Wake Correctional minimum custody offender who did not return from his work release job in Garner on Sept. 20, 2019. Latroy Strickland (# 0565506) was picked up by the Raleigh Police Department before dawn today for crimes he allegedly committed while he was being sought for escape. According to police, he apparently gave an alias but his true identity was confirmed a few hours later.
The State of North Carolina and FEMA have approved more than $3.7 million to reimburse New Hanover County for debris removal costs following Hurricane Florence. More than 1.1 million cubic yards of vegetation and other storm-related debris—enough to fill 75,000 dump trucks—were collected throughout the county. Funds for this project cover work completed from Sept. 14, 2018 through Nov. 18, 2018.
On Sept. 28 at approximately 9:45 p.m. at Columbus Correctional Institution, offender Scott Whitmeyer (#1402845) was assaulted with a homemade weapon at the facility. Correctional staff responded and worked to resuscitate the offender. Whitmeyer was transported to a local medical facility, where he was pronounced dead by local medical officials at 10:45 p.m.

The State of North Carolina and FEMA are announcing more than $6.5 million to the Pender County Board of Education for Hurricane Florence-related cleaning costs.  The funds reimburse mold remediation at Pender County elementary, middle and high schools that flooded during Hurricane Florence. The mold removal eliminated health and safety threats so students, faculty and staff could return to school.
As part of ongoing reform efforts, the Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice will temporarily suspend operations at three minimum custody facilities and move correctional officers and other staff to neighboring prisons to address staffing challenges. This action is intended to better utilize available staff and ultimately make state prisons and communities safer.
State correctional and local law enforcement officers are seeking Wake Correctional Center minimum custody offender Latroy Strickland (# 0565506), who was reported missing from the facility last night in Garner while on work release. Strickland was last seen near his work site in Garner around 4 p.m. yesterday and failed to return to custody as required by 8:30 p.m.
