Department of Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks and other state officials today officially dedicated the new dining hall at Samarcand Training Academy in a ribbon-cutting ceremony held in Moore County.

The newly constructed 7,500 square foot building is capable of seating 180 students, guests and visitors. The facility offers greatly expanded space and amenities compared to the smaller cafeteria it replaces. Groundbreaking began in February 2018 and was recently completed by the NC DPS Inmate Construction Program at a cost of $2.7 million.
In recognition of the important public service provided by the state’s probation/parole officers, Gov. Roy Cooper has proclaimed July 21-27, 2019, as Probation, Parole and Community Supervision Officers’ Week in North Carolina.

 
State correctional and law enforcement officers are seeking Lanesboro Minimum Custody offender Lamorris W. Rivers (#0830041) who was reported missing from the facility Saturday evening.

Rivers, 31, is described as a black male with a medium build, standing 6-feet tall and weighing 198 pounds with black hair and brown eyes, originally from Anson County, NC. He is serving a sentence for Speeding/Eluding arrest and was admitted to prison on August 17, 2018. He was scheduled for release August 13, 2019.
The North Carolina Department of Public Safety family will never forget October 12, 2017. On that day at Pasquotank Correctional Institution, four heroes -- Veronica Darden, Geoffrey Howe, Wendy Shannon and Justin Smith – were viciously assaulted and ultimately lost their lives fulfilling their duties as public servants.
Clarence N. Godley, food service manager III at Maury Correctional Institution, received the prestigious John R. Larkins Award Jan. 15 during the 2017 State Employees Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration in downtown Raleigh. This award is the highest civil rights honor that can be won by a state employee.
As the winter weather approaches, the State Highway Patrol along with the N.C. Department of Transportation are reminding motorists to not leave their vehicles abandoned on the shoulders of public roadways.  For the safety of the traveling public and to ensure plow and salt trucks can effectively work to clear roads, state officials are working together to identify and move abandoned vehicles that are blocking travel lanes or posing an immediate safety hazard.
Nearly 230 law enforcement officers from state, local and federal agencies joined forces this week for Operation Silent Night, an enforcement operation that served outstanding criminal warrants and conducted compliance checks on high risk and violent offenders on probation and parole in Franklin, Granville, Vance and Warren counties.  

Significant arrests and accomplishments included:
Nearly 50 law enforcement officers and support staff from state, local and federal agencies joined forces this week for Operation Arrow – Onslow County, an enforcement operation that served outstanding criminal warrants and conducted compliance checks on high risk and violent offenders on probation and parole.
