Community Leave Program

The Community Leave Program provides an opportunity for inmates to attend activities in the local community that will assist in their reintegration into society. Trained volunteers escort offenders during the activity.

Criteria for Participation
Prison managers review offender progress reports, infractions, criminal history and public opinion to determine eligibility.

Program Operation
The facility's volunteer coordinator is responsible for the training and certification of volunteers who serve as community leave sponsors. After completing the required training, volunteers must complete a one-month probationary period before they are allowed to escort offenders to an activity.

All activities must be approved prior to leave. While on the community leave pass, offenders cannot have contact with relatives. Leaves may not exceed six hours. An offender may be allowed a maximum of three leaves per week. Female volunteers may not sponsor male offenders and male volunteers may not sponsor female offenders on outside activities.

Community Volunteers

Community volunteers can assist offenders in programs that support their rehabilitation and return to society as law-abiding citizens.  They perform numerous activities at the facility and escort eligible offenders to activities outside of the facility. The volunteer must complete a standard training offered by the facility. After completing the training, the volunteer will be issued an identification card. Activities conducted or sponsored by volunteers at facilities include counseling, tutoring, religious services and special events. Learn more about volunteering at NCDAC.
